The arch of the foot is made of many bones, joints, ligaments and muscles all working together to support the foot and allow heel-to-toe action of walking or running. Pain in the arch can be extremely debilitating and cause the body to make compensations to gait or posture to try to alleviate the pain.
Causes of arch pain can be weight gain, overuse or activity increase, poor footwear, stress fracture, abnormal foot posture/mechanics, medical conditions such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, tendon insertion strain, plantar fascia strain or ligament strain.
Due to the multiple causes, treatment can vary as well. It can involve strapping, rest, ice, massage, heat, anti-inflammatory topical or oral, stretching, strengthening exercises, footwear changes, orthotics, needling or physiotherapy.
